Uphold Card Overview

Uphold Card Key features

• Multi asset funding

  Choose one funding source in the app, such as USD, USDC, crypto or listed metals. Uphold sells enough at checkout to pay the merchant in local currency; conversion spreads and service fees can apply, but no fixed spread is published in the supplied data.

• US Essential rewards

  Uphold pays 2% in XRP on eligible US Essential purchases, capped at $120 per month. Essential has no annual fee, and the XRP you earn can change in value.

• US Elite rewards

  Uphold pays 4% in XRP on eligible crypto or metals funded purchases and 3% on fiat or stablecoin funded purchases, capped at $300 per month. Elite costs $99.99 per year and includes a metal card.

• UK GBP cashback

  Uphold pays 1% cashback in GBP on eligible GBP funded UK purchases, capped at £100 per month. You do not earn this cashback on crypto funded purchases under the published UK terms.

• Free virtual card

  You can activate a free virtual card on every plan, potentially within minutes after identity verification. Use it for online purchases or add it to a supported mobile wallet.

• Physical card options

  You can order a plastic card for $4.99 on US Essential or £9.95 in the UK. Use a physical card for ATM withdrawals and chip payments.

• Mobile wallet payments

  You can add your issued card to Apple Pay or Google Pay where those wallets are allowed. Then pay by tap with your phone.

• US ATM withdrawals

  Uphold charges $2.95 per US Essential ATM withdrawal, with withdrawal limits of $500 daily and $2,000 monthly. Elite has no Uphold ATM fee and limits of $2,000 daily and $10,000 monthly, though ATM owners can charge their own fees on either plan.

• UK ATM withdrawals

  Uphold charges £2.50 per withdrawal in the UK and EU, or £3.50 elsewhere. You can withdraw up to £500 at once and £1,000 per day; ATM owners may charge extra.

• Foreign transaction fees

  Uphold charges US Essential users a flat $1.50 foreign transaction fee plus FX costs. Uphold charges no foreign transaction fee on US Elite or the UK card, though FX conversion costs can still apply.

• No credit check

  Uphold checks your identity and residency rather than your FICO score. You need a supported US state address or a UK address; New York, Louisiana, US territories and Crown Dependencies are excluded.

• Custodial wallet spending

  You spend directly from your Uphold wallet without loading a separate prepaid balance. Uphold holds the assets and controls the keys; crypto and metals are not FDIC insured.

• In app controls

  You can turn on transaction alerts and freeze the card in the app if you spot a payment you do not recognize. You can also change your chosen funding source in the app.

Uphold Card Fees

• Annual and card fees US Essential costs $0 per year with a $4.99 plastic card, US Elite costs $99.99 per year with a metal card included, and the UK card has a free virtual card and a £9.95 physical card.
• ATM withdrawal fees US Essential charges $2.95 per withdrawal plus any ATM owner fee, US Elite charges a $0 Uphold ATM fee, and the UK card charges £2.50 in the UK and EU or £3.50 elsewhere.
• Foreign transaction fees US Essential charges a $1.50 flat foreign transaction fee plus FX, while US Elite and the UK card list a $0 Uphold foreign transaction fee, although the exchange rate can include conversion costs.
• Replacement fee US Elite includes one free replacement each year, then charges $29.99 per replacement.
• Conversion and funding fees Reported card-spend spreads sit around 0.5% to 0.7% on stablecoins and higher on BTC, ETH, and XRP, while US card deposits cost 3.99%, ACH is typically free, and crypto deposits have no Uphold deposit fee but still incur network charges.

How to use Uphold Card

1. 1

   Create your account

   Open an Uphold account with your home address in the UK or a supported US state. You cannot get the card in New York, Louisiana or US territories, and residents of Crown Dependencies are also excluded.

   Verify your identity

   Complete Uphold's identity verification (KYC) and wait until Uphold fully approves your account.

3. 3

   Choose your card

   Open the Card section in the app and choose Essential or Elite in the US, or the UK card. US Essential has no annual fee; US Elite costs $99.99 per year.

4. 4

   Activate your virtual card

   Activate the free virtual card. Add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay if you want to pay by tap where those wallets are allowed.

5. 5

   Set your funding source

   Deposit funds into your Uphold wallet if needed, then select one available balance as your card's funding source in the app. Uphold holds these funds in custody; you do not load a separate card balance.

6. 6

   Make a test purchase

   Make a small online purchase with the virtual card or tap with your mobile wallet; Uphold sells enough of your selected balance to pay the merchant in local currency. Check the debit and conversion, then confirm any reward credit for an eligible purchase.
