Revolut card Overview
The Revolut Card is a Visa or Mastercard debit card linked to a Revolut account. There's no credit line behind it. Every purchase or withdrawal comes straight out of the balance sitting in your app, so you spend what you've already loaded, nothing more. Revolut issues both a virtual card, ready in minutes for online use and phone tap, and a physical card that arrives by post once you order it. Standard plan customers usually get the first card at no extra cost, though delivery is often billed separately, and extra cards or a metal design come with their own price.
This card fits people whose main money headache is currency, not credit. Frequent travellers benefit most, since Revolut lets you hold dozens of currencies in one account and pay in over 150 wherever the card scheme is accepted. Anyone splitting life between two countries, say a salary in GBP and rent in EUR, can keep both balances in the same app instead of juggling two bank accounts. It also suits people who like managing money entirely from a phone: freezing a card, setting a spend limit, or generating a disposable virtual number for a gym sign-up takes seconds. Families can add Junior cards under one adult account. It's a weaker fit if you need an overdraft, want a bank branch to walk into, or need a card that never adds a fee on weekend spending.
Getting money into the account is simple: bank transfer, a linked debit card, or Apple Pay and Google Pay where that's offered. Once it's in, you spend directly from whichever currency balance you hold, or the card converts automatically if you don't hold that currency. Conversions during the week run at an interbank style rate, but each plan caps how much you can convert at that rate before a small percentage fee kicks in. Convert on a Saturday and most plans add a weekend markup on top. ATM cash follows the same logic: a free monthly allowance tied to your plan, then a percentage charge once you go over it, and the machine's own operator can still tack on a surcharge Revolut has no control over.
What sets this card apart from a typical high street debit card is how much sits inside one app. You get real-time payment alerts, instant freeze and unfreeze, spend categories, and separate "Pockets" to keep travel money away from your salary. Crypto is built into the same account too: you can buy, sell, and hold a long list of tokens, stake a handful of proof-of-stake coins, and send or receive on a smaller set of supported networks. None of that needs a separate exchange login. Paid plans (Plus, Premium, Metal, Ultra) layer on higher FX and ATM caps, travel insurance, and on some tiers, cashback, though the actual numbers move by country and are worth checking in your own app before you upgrade.
I'd treat the Standard plan as the sensible starting point. Watch your monthly FX and ATM meters inside the app, and only pay for a higher plan once you can see the caps are actually getting in your way. Fees, cashback rates, and which countries get which perks change often enough that the only number worth trusting is the one shown live on your own account.
Revolut card Key features
-
Physical debit card
You get a chip and PIN card for shops, ATMs and transport, plastic on Standard or metal on paid plans. The first card is often included on Standard, but delivery fees usually apply and extra cards cost more.
-
Instant virtual card
A virtual card shows up in the app within minutes of signing up, so you can add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay before any plastic arrives. Disposable versions swap out the card number after each use.
-
Multi-currency wallet
You can hold balances in 30-plus currencies and spend in 150-plus, with the card pulling from whichever currency you already hold. Conversion runs at interbank-style rates on weekdays, capped by your plan's fair-use limit.
-
Free ATM allowance
Each plan comes with a monthly free withdrawal amount before a 2 percent fee kicks in (UK Standard is often around £200 or five withdrawals). The ATM owner can still add its own surcharge on top.
-
Real-time spend controls
You get a push alert for every tap, and you can freeze the card, change the PIN, or set a spending cap right from the app. Splitting cash into Pockets keeps travel money separate from everyday spend.
-
Apple Pay and Google Pay
Both wallets carry a tokenised version of the card, so you tap to pay without pulling out the plastic. It works for the virtual card as soon as it is issued.
-
Crypto buy, sell, hold
A large token list sits in the same app as your everyday spending, and you can stake selected proof-of-stake coins like ETH or SOL. Crypto-to-card spend exists in some regions, but conversion fees apply.
-
On-chain send and receive
A smaller list of coins and networks (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Ripple, Polygon, and a few others) supports withdrawal and deposit to external wallets. Send to the wrong network and the funds are gone for good, so the destination address and network need to match exactly.
-
Local and international transfers
Sending money to other Revolut users, or over rails like UK Faster Payments and SEPA, is free or low cost. International wires outside those rails run on a published fee table you check in-app.
-
Budget tools and Pockets
Categories and spend analytics show where money goes, and Pockets let you wall off salary or savings from a general spending balance. It is a simple way to stop travel money getting spent by accident.
-
Paid plan perks
Plus, Premium, Metal and Ultra raise your FX and ATM limits and add things like travel insurance, lounge access, and cashback on some spend, priced by country (UK examples run from about £3.99 up past £14.99 a month). You only need to pay if the higher limits or perks are worth more than the subscription.
-
Junior and extra cards
An adult account holder can issue a card for a teenager with parental controls attached. It is one way to give a kid a card without handing over full account access.
-
Bank licence and deposit cover
Revolut Bank UK Ltd is authorised by the PRA and FCA, with FSCS cover up to £120,000 per person on eligible deposits. In the EEA, Revolut Bank UAB in Lithuania carries deposit guarantee cover up to €100,000, and US card balances pass through FDIC-style cover up to $250,000 with partner banks. Crypto and investment balances sit under different rules, so it is worth checking in-app which entity actually holds each balance.
Revolut card Fees
-
Monthly plan fee Standard is free in the UK; Plus, Premium, Metal, and Ultra charge a monthly fee (UK examples: Plus about £3.99, Premium about £7.99, Metal about £14.99, Ultra higher).
-
FX weekday rate You get interbank style exchange rates up to a monthly cap (often £1,000 on Standard, £3,000 on Plus), then about 1 percent on Standard or 0.5 percent on Plus; Premium and above usually have no cap.
-
Weekend FX markup Converting currency from Friday evening to Sunday evening UK time adds an extra markup, commonly 1 percent on lower plans.
-
ATM withdrawals UK Standard often gives a free allowance (around £200 or five withdrawals a month), then charges about 2 percent, and the ATM owner can add its own surcharge on top.
-
Crypto trade and withdraw Crypto trading fees run around 1.5 to 2.5 percent on older tables (lower on higher plans), and withdrawing crypto adds a Revolut fee (about £1 on some coins, £3 on others) plus a variable network fee.

How to use Revolut card
-
Sign up and verify identity
Download the Revolut app, enter your mobile number, and confirm the SMS code. Add your name, date of birth, address, and email, then upload a government ID and take the in-app selfie.
-
Pick a plan
Choose Standard or one of the paid plans (Plus, Premium, Metal, Ultra). Prices vary by country, so check what your plan includes before you confirm.
-
Add money to your account
Fund your Revolut balance by bank transfer, a linked card, or Apple Pay / Google Pay where it is offered. This balance is what your card spends from.
-
Get your virtual card
Open Cards, tap Add new, and choose Virtual. It appears in minutes and you can add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay right away for online or phone payments.
-
Order and activate a physical card
If you want plastic, order Physical from the same Cards screen and pay any delivery or design fee shown at checkout. Set a four-digit PIN, then activate the card in the app once it arrives by post.
-
Make your first payment
Pay in store, online, or at an ATM with either card. Before you spend abroad or withdraw cash, check the app for your remaining FX and ATM allowances so you don't hit the fair-use cap.

Still using Revolut as my daily driver after 1+ year.

Not because of a campaign. Because the old-bank friction is gone.
Instant transfers. Stocks and crypto in the same app. Pockets so money actually stays allocated. Real rates and no foreign fees when I travel.
Virtual card for online stuff, physical card when I need it.
Quiet upgrade.
That's it. -
Just noticed something cool
View on X ↗
Called a software company for support with their product
They asked for the last 4 digits of the card on file for verification
I opened the Revolut app to check what they were
In the app, there was a red banner at the top saying "Revolut is not calling you"
Thought that was such a smart scam prevention system
They'd detected that I opened the app while I was on a call, checked the number I was speaking to, and let me know it's not them
I can definitely see this being helpful for so many people at the older end of their customer base
Really goes to show how a small detail can be all it takes to solve a significant problem -
Never sign up to a gym with your real credit card, always generate one of those burner cards like on Wise/Revolut/Privacy Dot Com etc

same goes for any shady business
feels so good just opening the app and clicking "Delete card" without speaking to anyone or filling out a form
Revolut card Review
Pros
- Interbank style FX rates apply on weekdays up to your plan's monthly cap.
- Virtual cards are issued in the app within minutes, so you can spend before plastic arrives.
- Disposable virtual card numbers rotate after each use, which limits damage if a merchant leaks your details.
- Revolut Bank UK deposits carry FSCS protection up to £120,000 per person.
- You can freeze the card, set spend limits, or delete a card instantly from the app with no call needed.
- One app holds 30 plus currencies, crypto, and everyday spending, so you skip juggling separate accounts.
- The app can flag calls claiming to be from Revolut, which helps catch phone based fraud attempts.
- Junior cards let a parent issue a controlled card to a teen under one adult account.
Cons
- Weekend FX carries an extra markup, often around 1 percent on lower plans.
- Standard and Plus plans hit a monthly FX cap, then pay roughly 1 percent or 0.5 percent on top.
- Free ATM cash is capped by plan, often near £200 or five withdrawals before a 2 percent charge applies.
- Accounts can get frozen during KYC or fraud reviews, and chat support replies can be slow.
- On chain crypto send and receive only cover a short list of coins and networks, not the full in app token list.
- Crypto withdrawals stack a Revolut service fee on top of a variable network fee.
- Metal card coating wears down with regular use.
- Physical card delivery can add a fee and take days to weeks depending on country.
Our verdict
Revolut is worth carrying if you travel a lot or juggle currencies, but the free plan has limits worth knowing. Standard gives you interbank-style FX rates on weekdays, only up to a monthly cap (often £1,000 in the UK). Spend on a Saturday and you eat a weekend markup, often around 1 percent. Go over your ATM allowance and you pay 2 percent, plus whatever the machine itself charges. The card earns its place if FX and multi-currency spend are your real problem. It earns less trust if your account gets frozen during a compliance check, which some users report and which I'd factor in before moving a large balance through it. I'd change my mind on the free plan the moment my spending regularly crosses that FX cap or lands on weekends. At that point, a paid tier or a second card starts to make more sense than fighting the fair-use limits.

Is Revolut card safe & legit?
Revolut Ltd is a real, well funded company, not a fly by night app. It was founded in 2015 by Nikolay Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko, and it now holds actual banking licences (PRA/FCA in the UK, a Lithuanian bank licence in the EEA), so cash balances get proper deposit protection (up to £120,000 in the UK, €100,000 in the EEA), not a self custody setup. Crypto is different though: those coins sit in Revolut's custody, not yours, and the known friction point is accounts getting frozen during KYC or fraud reviews with slow support replies, so I would not call it a red flag exactly, more a real annoyance to know about going in.
