Rail Card Overview

People searching for Rail Card should know that Rail is a business payments platform, not a consumer crypto debit card. You cannot order a plastic card for everyday purchases. Rail suits fintechs that need embedded payment accounts and finance teams that pay suppliers or contractors across borders.

Businesses fund accounts through bank transfers or supported stablecoins, including USDC and USDT. They can hold funds, then convert them when a recipient needs a different currency. Spending means supplier payments or payroll payouts to bank accounts and digital wallets, rather than purchases at a shop. Qualified custodians hold digital assets, so users do not control the wallet keys.

The useful difference is one API for bank and blockchain payments. Businesses can set up named virtual accounts to collect money and send stablecoin payments through the same integration. Recipients can receive fiat without opening an exchange wallet.

Rail uses commercial pricing. It does not publish a standard consumer fee schedule or cashback rate. Businesses need a written quote for transfer and conversion costs, plus any bank or blockchain charges. Rail is worth considering for business payment flows; shoppers who want card rewards need a different product.

Rail Card Key features

  • Business payments API

Businesses use Rail to collect and send money through bank networks and blockchains with one API. Rail does not issue a consumer card for shop purchases.

  • Named virtual accounts

Rail issues virtual IBANs and named accounts for business collections. Senders can pay through bank networks without a crypto wallet.

  • Fiat and stablecoins

Businesses can convert between supported fiat currencies and stablecoins within the same account. A payer can send USDC while the recipient receives money in a local bank account.

  • Custodial asset storage

Qualified custodians such as BitGo hold digital assets, while partner banks hold fiat. Users do not control the wallet keys and must rely on those providers for custody.

  • Embedded user accounts

Platforms can add Rail accounts to their own products under their own brand. End users can hold funds and make transfers through those accounts.

  • Multiple blockchain options

Businesses can transfer supported assets across networks such as Ethereum and Solana. Asset support varies by network, so teams need to check the token and chain before a transfer.

  • Compliance checks

Teams can handle customer onboarding and sanctions screening through the API. Rail also provides AML monitoring and fraud checks.

  • Large payment quotes

Businesses can request a quote for larger transactions through Rail's OTC process. Public materials do not publish a fixed rate for these trades.

  • Business treasury transfers

Platforms can pay vendors on a customer's behalf or move funds between their own business entities. Teams do not need to route those payments through personal wallets.

  • Contract based pricing

Rail discloses commercial pricing in customer agreements or through the platform that embeds Rail, with no public consumer fee schedule. Ask for the full written costs, including bank charges and any conversion spread.

Rail Card Fees

  • Platform fees Rail or Ripple sets commercial fees in your customer agreement, or the third-party platform you use discloses them.
  • FX spread You may pay an FX spread on conversions; actual rates are not published.
  • Bank transfer fees You may pay bank rail fees for ACH or SWIFT payouts, plus extra fees charged by recipient banks.
  • Blockchain gas fees You pay blockchain gas fees for on-chain transfers; no fixed amount is published.
  • Subscription fees You may pay a monthly subscription if the platform that embeds Rail charges per seat; no amount is published.

Rail Card Supported networks

  • Bitcoin
  • Ethereum
  • XRP Ledger
  • Polygon
  • Solana
  • Tron
  • Near
  • BNB Chain

How to use Rail Card

  1. Request business access

Rail is a business payments API, not a consumer card you can order for shop purchases. Use the Rail or Ripple payments contact path to request production or sandbox access.

  2. Verify your business

Complete entity KYC and provide beneficial owner data.

  3. Connect to the API

Use the client credentials you receive to authenticate against the OAuth endpoint. Create a customer record for each end user or internal entity you will serve.

  4. Open an account

Choose a product type and an asset ID, such as FIAT_MAINNET_USD or SOLANA_MAINNET_USDC, to open the account. Generate virtual account details or a deposit address for inbound funds.

  5. Fund your account

Get the written fee schedule before you send live funds, since Rail does not publish a single consumer rate. Fund the account by bank transfer or an on-chain transfer using the account details or deposit address you generated.

  6. Send your first payment

Screen the counterparty before your first outbound payment, and convert assets if the recipient needs a different currency. Submit the payout through the API, then monitor status webhooks and keep an audit record.

Rail Card Review

Pros

  • Businesses can send bank and blockchain payments through one Rail API.
  • Businesses can collect payments through named accounts and virtual IBANs.
  • Recipients can receive fiat or digital assets without opening an exchange wallet.
  • Businesses can convert USDC into fiat for payouts to local bank accounts.
  • Platforms can manage customer identity checks and sanctions screening through the same API.
  • Businesses can request quotes for larger transfers through Rail's RFQ process.

Cons

  • Rail does not issue a consumer card for everyday purchases.
  • Rail discloses pricing through commercial agreements rather than a public fee schedule.
  • You may pay bank and blockchain fees on top of platform charges.
  • Third-party custodians hold your crypto keys, so you do not control custody.
  • Businesses must complete identity checks and integrate an API before use.
  • You may wait longer and pay more if Rail routes a payment through SWIFT.

Our verdict

I wouldn't order Rail Card: Rail has no consumer card. I'd consider Rail for cross-border businesses comfortable with custodial funds. Rail doesn't publish standard all-in pricing or a consumer cashback rate. Ask for conversion spreads plus all platform and payment fees. I'd reconsider if Rail launched a consumer card with proven savings after every charge.

Rail funding

  • Founded by Bhanu Kohli, CEO, and Tarun Mistry, CTO, founded Rail as Layer2 Financial in Toronto in 2021; the raw data does not include their earlier backgrounds.
  • Series A - Jul 2024 Galaxy Ventures led the $10.7 million Series A announced on 31 July 2024, with Accomplice participating.

Is Rail Card safe & legit?

Rail is a legitimate, regulated business payments company, founded as Layer2 Financial by Bhanu Kohli and Tarun Mistry, backed by Galaxy Ventures and Accomplice, and later acquired by Ripple. It does not issue a consumer card: balances are custodial, with digital assets held by custodians such as BitGo and fiat held at partner banks. The supplied data names no fraud red flags, but you depend on those providers to access your funds and face stablecoin issuer risk.

    Contrarian take:
the best financial system isn't the one you check every day.
It's the one that doesn't need you to.
Meet Miriam. She hasn't logged into her budgeting app in 3 weeks.
Her finances have never been healthier.

Here's what removing herself looked like:
→ Income splits automatically the day it lands
→ Bills, savings, investing — all pre-decided, not daily decisions
→ The only "action" left is a monthly 10-min review
No motivation required. No discipline required. Just architecture.
The old model made Miriam the safety net, catching mistakes after they happened.
The new model makes her irrelevant to the process working.
Best financial system doesn't ask "how disciplined are you?"
It asks: "what happens if you forget this exists?"

Life happens. Salaries delay. Bills pop up. Discipline fades.
That’s why “trying harder” eventually fails.
The best savings habit is the one that works even when you forget.
Instead of relying on willpower every month, let your money move automatically before you can spend it.
    Build systems, not excuses.

Your salary doesn’t disappear because you “lack discipline.”
It disappears because you wait 24 hours to decide what to do with it.
    The real pattern is simple:
    Earning → Delay → Spending.
That delay is the killer. Because money has no “waiting room” in your account.
    2 more in this thread
But the first 24 hours after payday is when spending pressure is highest.
    You don’t need more motivation
You need a system that acts before spending starts.
That’s why we built Miriam. The moment your salary lands, she allocates it automatically

Day 20 doesn’t have to be panic.
Day 20 can look like Day 1.
    Because the saving already happened.
