Polymarket Canada: Can I Use It, Is It Legal, How To Trade
Is Polymarket available in Canada? Four provinces are close-only, the rest trade normally. Province status table, the rules behind it, and funding steps.

Polymarket works in most of Canada. It does not accept new trades in the four provinces where about three quarters of Canadians live. That change landed in July 2026 and it caught a lot of traders mid position.
This guide covers where Polymarket access stands in August 2026, why the four biggest provinces lost it, how to use Polymarket in Canada if you live somewhere else, and which legal options exist if you do not.

If Polymarket is blocked or unavailable in your province, you can also explore third-party trading terminals and trading bots. These tools can provide alternative interfaces for managing and executing prediction-market trades, with some offering features such as automated execution, copy trading, wallet tracking, and faster order management.
You can explore the available options here:
- Polymarket Trading Terminals: Browse Polymarket Trading Terminals
- Polymarket Trading Bots: Browse Polymarket Trading Bots
Always check whether a specific service is legally available to you before trading. Availability can vary by province and provider.
Is Polymarket Available in Canada Right Now?
Yes, unless you live in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia or Quebec.
Polymarket checks your IP address and applies restrictions at the order level. There is no identity check on the wallet based global platform, so your province is the only thing standing between you and a trade.

What close only mode means for Canadian traders
Close only is not a hard block. The site loads, your balance shows, and you can sell out of anything you already hold. New orders get rejected. New accounts from those provinces cannot start trading at all.
Polymarket uses the same setting for the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Brazil and more than 40 other jurisdictions. The point is to let people exit without adding risk while the legal position gets sorted out.
Why Is Polymarket Banned in Four Canadian Provinces?
Ontario banned Polymarket first
In April 2025 the Ontario Securities Commission settled with Blockratize Inc. and Adventure One QSS Inc., the companies behind Polymarket. The two admitted they had offered binary options to Ontario residents between June 2020 and May 2023, which breaks Multilateral Instrument 91-102.
The bill: CAD $200,000 in administrative penalties, CAD $25,000 toward investigation costs, and USD $22,966.75 handed back as Ontario sourced revenue. The companies also took a two year trading ban that runs to 2027 and agreed to keep Ontario IPs geoblocked, drop any Ontario marketing, and file a compliance certificate every year.
The revenue figure tells you something. Under twenty three thousand US dollars triggered a full enforcement action. The OSC was not chasing money.
Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec followed in July 2026
Polymarket updated its terms of service on July 6, 2026 and added three more provinces. Alberta's regulated iGaming market opened seven days later, on July 13.
Alberta's iGaming Minister Dale Nally addressed it at the launch event:
"Polymarket made the decision themselves to geo-fence themselves out."
No provincial regulator ordered the British Columbia or Quebec blocks either, at least not publicly. Polymarket moved first. Both provinces have active or incoming online gambling frameworks, and the company appears to have decided that sitting outside them was not worth the fight.
Everywhere else in Canada, no securities regulator has announced anything against Polymarket. That silence is what keeps the smaller provinces open.
Is Polymarket Legal in Canada?
There is no federal law that names Polymarket. Securities and gambling rules sit with the provinces, so the answer changes depending on your postal code.
The rule that matters is Multilateral Instrument 91-102, in force since 2017. It bans anyone from advertising, offering, selling or trading a binary option with a term under 30 days to an individual investor. A Polymarket share pays one dollar if the event happens and nothing if it does not. Most of its markets resolve inside a month. The fit is close enough that the OSC did not have to stretch.
Can you trade on Polymarket in Canada without breaking the rules?
On April 2, 2026 the Canadian Securities Administrators published a notice with CIRO restating the position. No prediction market has been recognized as an exchange in Canada or registered as a dealer, and none has an exemption. The CSA said it would issue further guidance and consider more action.
Enforcement so far has gone after operators, not individual traders. That is the pattern, not a guarantee.
Legal Canadian Alternatives to Polymarket
Canada has a regulated path now, though it is narrow.
CIRO has approved two investment dealers to give clients access to event contracts. Interactive Brokers Canada got there in 2025 and lists questions on gold prices, recession timing and record temperature years. Wealthsimple has approval and plans to open access to roughly 4,000 Kalshi contracts. Questrade has applied.
The approved contracts carry a minimum 30 day term to maturity, which keeps them clear of the binary options ban. Coverage stops at economic indicators, financial markets and climate data. Sports and elections stay off limits.
| Polymarket | CIRO approved dealers | |
|---|---|---|
| Regulated in Canada | No | Yes |
| Available provinces | All except ON, AB, BC, QC | All |
| Market types | Politics, sports, crypto, culture, economics | Economics, financial markets, climate |
| Minimum contract length | None | 30 days |
| KYC | None on the global platform | Full |
| Funding | USDC on Polygon | CAD from a bank account |
| Recourse if funds go missing | None | Dealer complaint process |
If you mainly trade rate decisions or inflation prints, the regulated route covers you. If you want election or sports markets, it does not.
How to Use Polymarket in Canada: Step by Step
Sign up takes about two minutes. You connect a wallet and you are in. No documents.
How to access Polymarket in Canada from an open province
Open polymarket.com on a normal home connection, connect a wallet, and check that the order panel accepts a test order. If your province is restricted, the site loads but new orders get refused.
Funding your account with Interac e-Transfer and USDC
Deposits run on USDC on the Polygon network. The route most Canadians use:
- Buy USDC on a Canadian exchange that accepts Interac e-Transfer. Shakepay, Newton, Bitbuy and Coinbase all work.
- Copy your Polymarket deposit address from the app.
- Withdraw the USDC and select Polygon as the network. Pick the wrong network and the funds are gone.
- Wait. Polygon transfers usually confirm in under a minute and cost a fraction of a cent.
Send a small test amount the first time. Ten dollars costs you nothing to lose and confirms the address works.
Getting your money back out
Withdrawals run the same path backwards. Send USDC from Polymarket to your exchange wallet, sell for CAD, cash out by e-Transfer or direct deposit.
Polymarket Taxes in Canada: What the CRA Expects
The Canada Revenue Agency does not have a Polymarket specific rule. It applies the usual test.
Occasional trading with your own money points toward capital gains, where 50% of the gain is taxable. Frequent, systematic trading, especially with borrowed funds or a business like setup, points toward business income, which is fully taxable.
Two things make this easier at filing time. Record the CAD value of every deposit and withdrawal on the day it happened, and keep a log of each position with its resolution date. Crypto to crypto conversions can trigger a disposition on their own, so the exchange leg matters as much as the trade.
A Canadian accountant who handles crypto is worth the fee here. The classification question has real money attached to it.
Can You Bet on Polymarket in Canada With a VPN?
If you sit in one of the four restricted provinces, a VPN looks like an obvious fix. It is a poor trade.
Polymarket's terms prohibit using tools to hide your location. The platform has tightened detection on suspicious traffic and restricts accounts that show location spoofing. An account flagged mid position is the worst outcome available: funds you cannot move and no support line that will help.
The legal side does not disappear either. MI 91-102 covers trading, not only offering, so a bypassed geoblock does not put you back on the right side of the rule.
Your clean options in Ontario, Alberta, BC or Quebec are closing what you hold and moving to a CIRO approved dealer for the market types they cover.
Will More of Canada Lose Polymarket Access?
Alberta's iGaming market opened in July 2026 and other provinces are building similar frameworks. Each launch gives Polymarket another reason to geofence rather than argue. Manitoba and Saskatchewan are plausible next entries on the list.
Pushing the other way, the CSA said more guidance is coming and Questrade is in the approval queue. A wider set of approved event contracts would give Canadians a legal answer that does not depend on which province they woke up in.
Polymarket has not applied for a Canadian license and has given no sign it plans to.
Polymarket Canada FAQ
Is Polymarket banned in Canada?
No. Four provinces are in close only mode. The rest of the country has full access.
Can Canada use Polymarket without a VPN?
Yes, from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Atlantic Canada and the territories. Those provinces have no block on them.
Is Polymarket allowed in Ontario?
No new trades. The OSC settlement bans Polymarket from serving Ontario residents until at least 2027.
Can Ontario residents withdraw money from Polymarket?
Yes. The settlement specifically allows Ontario residents to close existing positions and take their funds out.
Does Polymarket require KYC in Canada?
The global wallet based platform does not. The separate US version does, and Canadians cannot use it.
Which crypto exchange is best for funding Polymarket from Canada?
Any exchange that supports Interac e-Transfer and USDC withdrawals on Polygon. Shakepay, Newton and Bitbuy all handle this.
Will more Canadian provinces get blocked?
Possibly. Every new provincial iGaming framework raises the odds. Polymarket has moved before regulators asked, twice.
Check Your Province Before You Deposit
Open Polymarket's terms of service page and confirm your province is not on the restricted list. Do that before you send any USDC, not after. The July 2026 change went live with no announcement, and the next one probably will too.
If you are in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Atlantic Canada or the territories, fund a small amount first, keep your records from day one, and talk to an accountant before your trading volume gets interesting.
If you are in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia or Quebec, close out what you hold and look at Interactive Brokers Canada or Wealthsimple for event contracts you can trade without wondering whether your account will be frozen next month.
